Spiritual Hygiene: The Forgotten Benefits of Spiritual Routines

The Need for Spiritual Routines

One would think that because I connect to Spirit for my clients that making the time for myself to connect would be so facile. I’m an entrepreneurial mom – I juggle the demands of my own business and the needs of family. Like most parents, I often put them first instead of my own needs.

Sometimes, I walk past my altar and say to myself, “It would be nice to carve out just a bit of time to connect just for me.” I often find myself believing that I need to write this article, or fix that issue, or respond to those emails, or whatever needs to be done right now and that connecting to Spirit can wait. The truth is – and I often forget – everything else can be done better if I connect with Spirit first in a daily spiritual routine. Better insight, fulfilling peace of mind, confidence and trust are just some of the benefits of spiritual hygiene.

I easily spend 20 minutes each day putting on makeup, doing my hair, and getting dressed each morning. I’ve spent the better part of 20 years with the same routine and so the idea of not making time to be centered and connected to Spirit seems so silly when putting this fact into perspective. How much time do you spend on your personal regimes alone?

Making Space

When was the last time you prayed? When was the last time that you allowed God a moment of your time? Now, when was the last time you brushed your teeth? If you’re like one of my friends, then surely at least once this week? How about a shower? These are easy to answer.

I tell my clients that making time to pray and receive messages from Spirit is just as important as cleaning our bodies and getting ready for each new day. Connecting to our higher selves, our Creator, and the natural forces around us reminds us of who we really are – Divine beings – and that alone can give us strength, energy, and inspiration to not just get through the day, but to make the most of it.

Refocusing From Distractions

It’s easy to get caught up within the hustle of each day. We’re a problem solving culture: constantly solving problems and creating solutions for problems we haven’t even yet experienced. I know there have been times in my life when I’ve tried to outsmart and anticipate “bad things” so that I’ll be prepared to handle them. Living so much into preparing in the present for some future ultimately distracts me from what will give me peace in the here and now. This is where emotional intelligence begins.

How Do You Connect To Spirit?

Emotional health relies on the ability to “de-stress”, relax, and feel grounded. Fortunately, spiritual hygiene can look different depending on the practicant. Some of my clients run as a means of meditation. Some, like me, sit at an altar with crystals and candles while praying and meditating. Some people chant, while others sing. There are people who confess their missteps and fears in sub rosa and there are those who go to a church and hypnotically listen to messages that will implant itself within the subconscious mind. However you connect to your Divine roots is totally up to you as all roads lead to one destination – unity.
