Kevin Love Says He Got Help For Panic Attacks
Even professional athletes at the top of their careers get help for panic attacks. Kevin Love, NBA star and forward for the Cleveland Cavaliers revealed his battle with panic attacks his in recent article for the Player’s Tribune.
After halftime, it all hit the fan. Coach Lue called a timeout in the third quarter. When I got to the bench, I felt my heart racing faster than usual. Then I was having trouble catching my breath. It’s hard to describe, but everything was spinning, like my brain was trying to climb out of my head. The air felt thick and heavy. My mouth was like chalk. I remember our assistant coach yelling something about a defensive set. I nodded, but I didn’t hear much of what he said. By that point, I was freaking out. When I got up to walk out of the huddle, I knew I couldn’t reenter the game — like, literally couldn’t do it physically.
Fortunately for Kevin Love, his team and managers immediately recognized the signs of anxiety. And, they supported him and got him help for panic attacks. It was during this time that Love realized anxiety affects everybody. At first, Love battled the stigma of mental illness as a professional athlete. However, he accepted the help and began seeing a therapist.
He says about how therapy helped him dig deep into his emotional landscape, “I realized how many issues come from places that you may not realize until you really look into them. I think it’s easy to assume we know ourselves, but once you peel back the layers it’s amazing how much there is to still discover.”
Finally, Love says that the death of his grandmother triggered the panic attacks. It was during therapy he realized he didn’t have time to grieve. Getting help for panic attacks opened the doors for healing.
Recognizing The Signs of Panic Attacks
I have had panic attacks before. I didn’t know that they were panic attacks until I called a psychologist for help. I’ve included a list of signs that you may be suffering from panic attacks.
- Tingling or Sweaty Hands
- Shortness of Breath
- Racing Mind
- Inability To Focus
- Vomiting & Diarrhea
- Shortness of Breath
- Feeling of Doom
- Uncontrollable Crying
- Feeling Like Your Going To Faint
- Wanting to hide or be alone
- Overwhelming Fear or Panic
- Feeling Out Of Control of Your Body & Mind
- Fear of Dying, Losing Control, Embarrassing Yourself
- Choking or Gagging
- Feeling confused as to why a non-triggering situation is causing a panic attack
There Is NO Shame In Getting Help For Panic Attacks
If you sense any of these symptoms, do not run away and hide your symptoms. Let out your emotions and starting talking to someone you trust. Just by focusing your mind on sharing will help take you off of the edge. If things get really bad, call for help right away for expert advice. It’s always better to be safe than sorry!
When I realized that I experienced panic attacks, I learned not to be afraid of them. Instead, I learned to apply emotional intelligence tools and energy therapy techniques to relieve the panic attacks. Additionally, I also learned to seek help from my trusted mentors in the healing arts to talk through and process hidden emotions. There is no shame in getting help to overcome personal challenges. It takes a strong person to admit when they need help. And, like Kevin Love, that’s what makes you coachable!
